The undesirable dance partner... is "that guy" (or girl) YOU?

In an informal survey I recently conducted entitled “Why a woman might refuse a dance”, one common answer from the women was “body odor”.

In such an intimate activity as dancing we should be conscious that good personal hygiene is paramount to being an appealing dance partner.  When we dance, we find ourselves in another’s arms for a whole song. If one of the dancers has an offensive odor, it is likely he (or she) will be refused future dances without anyone explaining why.

An unfortunate truth is that bad breath or body odor can happen to anyone - and it is usually undetectable to the offender himself.  We arrive straight from work to our dance class, we have no time to shower, or sometimes we eat just before a dance event. Garlic, onions, and coffee are to be avoided.

Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  1. Always brush your teeth and carry some chewing gum or breath mints with you.
  2. Wear clean clothing.
  3. Make sure your post-shower towel is fresh smelling (avoid drying with towels that are musty or have a mildew smell)
  4. If you sweat a lot, consider having extra t-shirts and face towels.

Many students invest a lot in dance classes, events, shoes, clothing and accessories to be able to enjoy a dance evening. Don’t let a small oversight decrease your chances of having fun on the dance floor.
